Randomness and a curious finding for those without a weak stomach

Ahhhh....carrots, rice and chicken with a chaser of prunes....ecstasy.

What of it? You talkin' to me? Don't knock it until you've tried it.

I suppose the shirt is true...even if she does cut my head off in pictures.

The sleep gig continues to be nirvana. I am in heaven forever long as this lasts. Now, a finding that really has me wondering what in the world went on for my girl. She is only 13 months old and would have no sufficient neurologic control to be potty-trained. When she has to go, indeed, she goes in that diaper. But, a couple of times when we had constipation issues I would help push her legs to her belly and tell her to push and then make grunting sounds so she would imitate it. That is exactly what she did and it worked. The other day I wasn't very directive about it but commented that the little nugget in her diaper was hardly worth the change and I thought she should push out more poo (yeah, I said it). Next thing I know she is grunting and straining and I'll be set out for a herd of hungry hyenas if she didn't fill that diaper. She may not have control to stop it (and I would never expect her to do so) but I can hardly believe I have a kid who poops on command at 13 months. I have heard about whistle training and all that business so perhaps it is a remnant from that or something similar. I don't know. But, I also know it was no coincidence because every time since if I say the words "push poo" at diaper time she will do it if there is anything near ready to come. Anyone else experience this with their kids? It just seems so young to be so responsive on that front. Every day...a surprise...some cuter than others ;0)

Hope you've had a great weekend...

Pooping on command. Wow! I'm impressed.

Glad the both of you are getting into a routine. They are so awesome. However, I must say that Eriks always doesn't want to go along with the routine. Like tonight because he fell asleep on the way home from the zoo and snoozed for about an hr.

I'm lovin' all the photos of Pipa by the way. She's getting cuter every day!

We have been home for about 3 1/2 years, and had a simliar experience. Our daughter was 12 months at the time of adoption. After many bouts with constipation, and a few interesting conversations with adoptive families and friends from China, I held her in a sitting position on the toilet and grunted. She smiled bigger than she ever had (as if to say, "finally!), pushed out her poop, and I haven't changed a poopy diaper since. Apparantly it isn't too uncommon, yet her paper work was marked as 'not potty trained.' We have since learned that many in China believe that Americans (Westerners) don't want to know about early potty training, so it is standard practice to list them as not potty trained. By that point, she was 13 months and had gotten used to urinating in her diaper, so she continued to wear them for a while (although she would go on the toilet if I whistled/grunted), but she wouldn't poop in the diaper. If you are interested, watch her for cues around her normal poop times (after eating, upon waking, or before sleep). Often they will give a cue (just like a baby cues whne they need to nurse). Take her to the toilet and grunt. Our daughter was so happy when I figured out what she was trying to tell us!!

OK, this post made me snort - YES, I actually snorted while laughing. LOL I'm gonna hafta try that poop on command thing with Maddie. She grunts and groans like a grown man and has a very difficult time for the smallest nuggets!! Who woulda thought I'd be so liberal with my conversations about poop!!?

This post gave me a chuckle, as you have taught your daughter to deliver a poop, just as you help your patients deliver their babies. Impressive, really!

Glad the sleep continues to go well...knock on wood.

LOL. How funny! They say it can be done but I've never really seen it in real life. Too cool. And too cute (in a poopy kinda way).

Long time follower, first time commenter....Love your blog and your daughter is beautiful!

Our youngest daughter was 10.5 months at adoption and was having major constipation issues in China. Our fantastic guide suggested putting her on the potty and making the noise that a pp said and it worked. It was more that we were trained than her but I rarely had to change a poopy diaper after that and the actual potty training was a breeze!

Too cute! I can just see you telling CW to "push poo" & her accomodating you. Hopefully, she'll always be this accomodating. Then again, don't count on it happening.

Erin never "did business" on command; however, she has always been regular like clockwork. If it doesn't happen, she gets cranky which is never a good thing.

Yes the babies from this SWI are all split pants babies that regularly are put on a pail and given the 'signal'. I heard about this but was 'too out of my mind' upon adoption to continue or emulate this.
This might explain why Pipa is pooping in the middle of the night because she is relaxed and not 'holding it in'? Just a thought.
Anyway she is perfect in every way and a 'smartie pants or smartie diaper' too!
Thanks for sharing your sweet and funny stories,
Kyra

Babies do in fact have the ability to control their elimination. In many cultures around the world (including China) caregivers learn to tune in to their babies cues and help them to go when the urge hits. In the West we put kids in diapers and they learn to ignore these signals. Perhaps one of the reasons many 5 year olds are still wetting the bed. Google "Elimination Communication" or "natural infant hygiene" if you're interested in learning more.

I just hope when you are tired and have Mommy brain and go to work that you don't tell a patient to "push poo" out! LOL!

Jeane can to us fully potty trained. In her orphanage, all of the babies are trained VERY young. They can't afford diapers and they are in such a routine that the kids just eventually get it. Plus, I think they are sort of dehyrdrated a lot of the time, so it's easy not to pee when you're like that....

Yep, Eliza was constipated and would poop when I held her over the toilet...

All I can say is I hope I get a poop on command baby! Things don't get much cuter than that!

My friend came home with her daughter at 11 months, she was fully potty trained (they used some Chinese words over the toilet and she'd go). My friend, being a professional nanny, knew she was too young for this and wanted to reverse the training but it was hard, so they kind of did both. But yes, she went on command pretty much all of the time.
