Question of the day.

Why in the world do luggage manufacturers make bags they call 'carry-ons' but they do not meet the airline size requirements of a carry on...not even close sometimes???

I am being plagued by 2 excess linear inches. Looks like I may be shopping for a smaller bag this weekend. Any 'LEGAL' carry on brand suggestions? Remember, I'm a tightwad when it comes to this kind of stuff so no Hartmann or LV suggestions ;0)

I have the bag from Costco and have never had a problem with it..I use it as my "flight bag" so it holds up really well too if you're looking for a bag to work in the future too.

Are you worried about the bag for China flights? or does it not meet the US standard?

It's the US standard. So many bags don't meet the 45 linear inches noted. Argh!

Thanks - I will check out Costco for sure.

oh goodness...then if you're just 2 inches off total..not just in height, I wouldn't worry about it. I just measured my flight bag and it's 47 linear inches when empty. it's the bag I took to China-flew United and they didn't bat an eye.

I took a backpack, backpack... backpack, backpack. (Okay, I've been watching too much Dora. Ignore.)

I am taking a backpack, backpakc, backpack as my personal item. The other is my carry-on.

We bought ours at Kohl's. I'll check their website and see if I can find it.

Do worry about the size, my mom just flew last week (on her way home from flying just two weeks before) and as of the first week of Feb they have seriously cracked down--they are measuring everyone!

I don't know if you have a pic-n-save aka odd lots, big lots, but they are going to beat the hell out of your bag anywho so grab a cheap one. Also, Target puts theirs on great clearance a lot and Kmart has cheap bags--although the quality stinks too. The other recommendation is Kohls--they often do 70% off.

ok, I'm totally with you on not wanting to break the bank on luggage either.
why don't you go to a TJ Maxx or Ross or some store like that with tape measure in hand. That way you can measure it right there in the store and in one of those stores you can get a name brand - good quality bag for MUCH less.

I don't recall having any issues with either of our carry ons. One was a small suitcase and the other a long dufflebag with wheels. No one measured anything. As long as it fit into the hole where they scan everything in security, there wasn't an issue!

Hmmm.....That sucks. I think you should just take the scissors to your bag and trim it.

WalMart had our luggage waiting right in the middle of the aisle. They have some good pieces. In fact, the bags all have rolling wheels (fabulous invention if you ask me!). You may want to look there. My smallest piece never causes a problem, & I use it whenever I fly.

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you, but I have often wondered the very same thing! Why in the world would they do that? I think "they" did because they could for so many years. It seems like until the airlines started charging for luggage, they were rather lenient with their rules. Now that they are charging and thus more people are trying to go carry-on, they are being more stringent.
Congrats on your TA, I cannot wait to follow your journey through China to bring Pipa home. Happy Valentine's Day to you!
