Remember just the other day when I was brazen enough to make the statement: "This has been easier than I expected"? I was just getting cocky and flying in the face of the fates. As a reward the flight from Nanchang to Guangzhou was visited by my daughter auditioning for her role in the remake of the exorcist. It was indescribably horrible. The screaming, kicking, red-faced crying began in airport security and didn't much give up until halfway through the flight. (Keep in mind there was an hour wait for the flight to take off!) I am already scheduling my shrink appointment for the day after the flight home which will about 8 times longer than the one I feel like I barely survived. Okay, so I'm not serious about the shrink...yet. Let's just say I want to forget everything from leaving the Galactic Peace Hotel in Nanchang to arriving at the Victory in Guangzhou.
Oh, and guess what? Here in tropical land the rain cloud has followed us. Rain both days so far. I keep hanging on to the concept that rain is a sign of good luck but I still wouldn't mind seeing some of that bad luck sunshine about now. Our motto for the trip weather has become: "This is boo-sheet".
It seems I have been gone forever in some ways and in others I can hardly believe it is nearly time to make the trek back with my gorgeous chicken wing in tow. I do thank all things wonderful that my girl continues to sleep all night. That is one lovely gift I tell ya.
Now on to random piccage:
Snake wine anyone? Yeah, c'mon, you know you want to try it....

For Pugmama...there's a pug waiting for you just outside of Lucy's on Shamian Island.

My hambone, chicken wing. She starts with the cheese as soon as you pull out the camera now.

Look at these women washing windows. They are just strolling about the ledges two stories up like nothing in the world is weird about it. No, the ledges are NOT that big either.

We were taking too long for this picture. Chicken Wing was wanting to make that stroller GO.

I just had to take this one. These little red shoes are even big on my girl.

We've all seen this photo before...I finally got to see it in person.

I think the gal taking the weights enjoyed the picture more than Chicken Wing (sorry, it seems like PIPA just doesn't fit my girl as well ;0) She weighs 19.8 lbs and is 29 inches long. She has legs like a Rockette.

Good Morning, Guangzhou. This is the very first thing I saw when I looked out the window in Guangzhou this Saturday morning. Dude had the gun at the ready and looked like he was itching to give it a try. Took me but a moment to figure out he was in front of the bank and the money truck had just pulled up. Whew...I was a little edgy there for a moment.

See ya'll later. Send me some karma for at least ONE day of sun during this stay in China.
I look forward to getting home and catching up with you all again soon.

Lots of good karma on the way for that flight home. I know it's still a few days away... but I'll just start sending it now so you'll have plenty. LOL!
Your chicken wing just gets cuter with every new pic you post.
Been wondering about ya, hoping everything was ok.
I think you have the only photo of a child NOT screaming her head off during the medical exam ----- I guess she used up all of her screaming energy on the flight.
I am sending some MAJOR good thoughts your way that that was a one time fluke, and the flight home will go smoothly. If not.....you know they do serve booze on planes, right?
AND --- OOOOHHHHHHH, look at the little Pug waiting for me in front of Lucy's. Seems unreal that I will be there within the next few months!
We miss you!!!
Hoping you get some sunshine soon!!!!!

Chicken Wing?? Can we call her CW? LOL!
Hope the sun comes out for ya soon! and of course your ride home is uneventful....and calm!
Oh my gosh, I remember those flights. I stole massive amounts of banana bread from the White Swan as last ditch ammunition. I made it all the way from Beijing to LAX to Chicago and only brought it out on the final leg from Chicago to Detroit. Best thing I ever did!!! So much fun to see you in China with your PIPA. She is absolutely precious. Enjoy your time there because it ends so quickly. I always wished I had bought more of the artwork sold in the streets there.

Whew, that man with the gun scared me too! Funny thing, at first I thought he was wearing a babushka on his head, but then I said why would he be wearing a babushka in China, it's not like you're in Russia.(lol)
Sorry to hear about the chicken wing episode. Don't worry hun, the first couple of times you feel real self-concious, then you get used to it real fast. Of course how could little chicken wing ever do anything like that with that sweet face??? :)
I love the photos at the medical clinic and Shamian Island. We are thinking about you guys and hope the rain stops following you. Glad you made it to Guangzhou safely.
Hugs,
Jonni
Have I mentioned how happy I am for you lately???
Good luck on the flight home.
LOVE all the photos..
Looks like you are having a great time ...minus some little things.. RAIN..
Pipa is a little peanut...

Sending you sunshiny thoughts.
Prayed to the Sun God for you this morning. Nothing worse then chilly rain. Some beautiful sunshine needed for your mental health and Pipa's big smiles. Donna loved Shamian Island, but it was sunshine all the way. Love your girl is showing her spirit!! I think it's a good sign, she is getting comfortable enough to let you know what she doesn't like... Linda
Yeah! The flight was horrible for Hannah as well. The only advice I can give you for the flight home is just know it will be trying, cowboy up to just get through it. Then you are home!!!!!!
Some people use the little red miracle liquid (Benadryl) to lessen the trauma on the little ones or the parents :).
You all will be fine. In the long run it is just a small bump in this wonderful journey. You can buy "adult" beverages.
So sorry the weather is such crud! Hopefully the sun will come out before you head home!!
I'll be sending good karma thoughts for a better plane ride the next time around!
Armed guy = SCARY!
Enjoy the last few days! LOVE the little red shoes ~ too cute!
Well, we called our experience with our little princess "The China Syndrome". She was pleasant at Civil Affairs when we received her, but as soon as we got on the bus, she started swinging left hooks. And screaming. She was the wild one of the bunch. Predictably unpredictable. To get the full effect you can someday go read my story of Day Two with her on our adoption website. So I TOTALLY feel your pain. The good news is she is an absolute darling gem in our lives. Just a little on the spicy side.
Here's hoping for some sunshine in Guangzhou. You deserve it!
Oh my word, Jaden did the EXACT same thing on our first flight with her. Our entire travel group was in shock that our seemingly happy go lucky child had turned into a raving lunatic on the flight. The good news is that the flight home went MUCH better, so I will hope the same is true for Pipa.
Hope the weather clears up so y'all can enjoy Guangzhou!
ok my 2 cents ideas - she has an ear infection or hungry or thirsty or tired...I would see if benadryl works on her - and no I don't condone it - but she can't (hopefully) do that for 11+ hours or so...
Get a new toy - that makes noise and flashes - don't give it to her until you MUST - there is a shop outside the back of the WS to the right - they have alot of toys that do that...they can also paint her face inside a bottle - I had 6-7 made and gave to g parents etc.so beautiful.
Looks like CW is doing great other than that..
ps when we were on our way home -K had a mega melt down in HK - and 2 small ones on the plane - other than that shw tore up paper and dropped things and picked them up etc (14 mths-not walking)..
Can't wait to keep reading! good Karma sent your way and sunshine!
Love your updates and pictures. I'll be thinking good thoughts for a non exorcist trip home. Oh and no thanks on the snake wine. :)
Hey.. I know that gunman.. lol.. I remember going to the bank of china to exchange 12,000.00 in bills to chinese money. I had one of these men back to back with me with his gun cocked and ready. SCARY.
So sorry it's raining all the time. I totally know its a bummer.
Sending good vibes for a sun shiny day.
Your girl smiles something brilliant! That plane ride was horrific for one of the ladies I was traveling with-poor little Elizabeth Anne howled something terrible! We had Ellie trained on a pacy by then (I hate them!) but were so thrilled it worked. Esp. with the long plane ride home. Was the hotel really called the Galactic Peace Hotel? The lobby looked just like the Jiangxi Hotel where we stayed! Same design amidst clothes hanging balconies I guess. =) Hoping your stay in GZ gets sunnier so you can enjoy some walks about the "French Quarter."
Kisses to C from E.
So sorry for the meltdown!! The long flight home may be better as most babies sleep through 8 or 10 hours of it (let's hope for your sake!!).
Your daughter's weight and height, in perspective with our AA: your baby (at not yet 14 months old) is bigger (weighs more) than AA was at 24 months old. We have alot of catching up to do!!
Alyzabeth's Mommy
A clog wearing woman- I knew I liked you!
Have a great time, sorry the plane ride sucked. Maybe she will be more composed on the next flight.
Can't wait to get there. We get Eli today !
Just delurking to say I'm really enjoying your blog. Your little girl is so adorable! Hope the flight home is better:)
Well, hope that first flight was just a fluke and she does BEAUTIFULLY all the way home! GOD she hams up SO well for the camera and dayum woman she favors you in a lot of ways- I know, I know, weird thing to say maybe but I'm just sayin'- something in that smile. Like I said before, you 2 just GO together! She is SO stinkin' CUTE.
Praying some of my Florida non stop no cloud in the sky sunshine finds it's way to China!!
Sending lots of sunny warm weather juju. And also good and peaceful traveling juju.
She just wanted to break you in a bit, I think. :-)
Your Chicken Wing is one photogenic kiddo! What a great smile.
I hope the sun shines on you soon!
Hoping that this flight was just a fluke and the flight home will be filled with harmony and peace and a very sweet content little chicken wing!!! I have so enjoyed following along and so glad you have allowed it!!! Have fun in GZ and keep the place warm there are a few of us who will be there in a few months!!
Great to hear another update and sorry your flight was so tough. And I am also sorry about the weather. I can't believe this! Two weeks ago we had the air-conditioner and shorts on. Now we are freezing, wearing 3 layers, and have the heater on...crazy.
Your girl looks so healthy! Can't wait to see your lives together blossom and unfold.
I still like PIPA better than chicken wing. And LOVE the red shoes!
Praying you get plenty of sun. Enjoy Guangzhou!
Sorry to hear that you're still dealing with rain. But, hey. At least it isn't cold. Right?
Your pics are wonderful. Chicken Wing (f/k/a PIPA) is beautiful! She seems to be a fairly happy little girl.
In the 2 weeks, we were in Guangzhou I never once saw a bank money delivery. Of course, being the banker that I am, I visited the bank every day just to see the tellers in action. And, I did take some pics of the ATM. My co-workers laughed their tushes off.
Y'know, I do it because I have to, but I really hate flying with the kiddos I hate it when it's just me and I hate it even more when it's with her. I can't control these delays and then there's ALL THE CRAP. I will do anything she requests when we fly. M&M's. Check. DVDs. Check. Mama making an ass of herself to make Tabby smile. Check. Anyhoo, REALLY feel for you. Wishing you good luck.
Sorry to hear it's been so rainy. It's hard to get your mojo up to having fun checking out the local sites when it's pourin down cats and dogs. Hope the sun comes out soon and that your last few days are as bright as your adorable baby girl!
Thanks for chackin in. We were missing you!!
Glad you all made it through the flight! Hopefully the flight home won't be as tramatic for your baby love and for you. heheee
Oh, how I miss Guangzhou.
Enjoy!
My wee one did the same exact thing on the flight from Chongqing to Guangzhou. Whew...the only good flight we had was the long one home. She is not a great flyer...
Wendy
A screaming airport experience, how fun. At least you weren't interrogated by several Ugandan guards with big guns. :-)
If you have rain your whole trip that is boo-sheet.
Hoping the trip home is better than the flight to GZ. You can always get some Benadryl and hope it knocks her out rather than hypes her up. And like Pug Mama said, "you can drink booze on the way home."
Enjoy the rest of your trip. Can't wait until you're safely back in the States!
I love how your little Chicken Wing (or CW) poses now for photos -you've taught her well!!
I don't know how you feel about medicating your precious cargo - but Benedryl works wonders to help them sleep - you both would be more comfortable on the L O N G flight home. ;0)
LOL! Everytime I told someone Tari was "just so good"... I felt for sure, I was jinxing the goodness?!!!
Sorry bout the rain - it really dampens the trip, no?! It rained the entire time we were in Shanghai (plus we were "snap frozen"!) GZ will clear up, and all will be well.
Love the itchy fingered army guy! That's hilarious! (its all fun, til someone loses and eye, right?!... or gets a hole in an organ?!)
Hope the exorsist stays well clear of your home flight... that could get ugly?!
Such a happy gal you got there:) Hoping the sun comes out for you all soon!
So she had a fit eh? Sorry it happened on a flight, let's hope she got it all out before the flight to O~Hi~yer....good lordy that was fuuny! How's bout we call her the Colonel? *snort*
Totally digging the pics. I certainly would have taken one of the snake wine, as I was sipping it down....=0) And the one for PM, yeah...you beat me to it!
Check my when you get home, I have another duck story for ya!
Things completely changed for us when we left the Galactic and went to GZ. Our seemingly happy child freaked out, kicked, screamed, and things just weren't the same for a long time. Sleeping issues started that first night in GZ and lasted for months. I hope that Claire is sleeping OK. If not, feel free to contact me because I've BTDT! I had a bloggy friend who had gone through similar that was a huge support throughout those first months.
