- I had one of those 'hate my job' moments this week. Fortunately those moments are very rare but it still happens now and then that I have to be the bearer of very bad news. This time it was telling a gal just a few years older than me about biopsy findings confirming breast cancer. Damn cancer. It is the most miserable news to get and to give.
- Everyone is getting pretty excited round these parts about impending babe arrival for me. I am all zen about it now and loving that feeling. Not much longer even if it is not this next time. Hakuna matata.
- I'm doing some audio stuff in an attempt to learn some basic phrases in Mandarin. Oh wow...I just hope I don't inadvertently insult anyone if I dare try a phrase or two. Seriously, I am using a child's book and STILL find it quite challenging. Yeah, my brain was apparently wired way too long ago. Even so, I know I will feel more comfortable just being able to recognize some of the sounds and tones so I know this will be worthwhile for me.
- I have had some of those 'you're so good to save a child' comments from some of my older generation patients lately. As much as those type of statements make me want to gag, I just note that my reasons are much more selfish. I want my child not to 'save' her but simply to parent her.
- I am hosting Turkey Day this year and decided since I had a lull in my weekend call that I would get my shopping out of the way. All I did was drive through the parking lot. No way. Mob scenes make me squirrelly and the place was packed. Looks like I will return in the wee hours of the morning. I may as well enjoy my last venture of middle-of-the-night-shopping for Turkey Day. Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to pull that off next year ;0) It IS so much better though. No cart dodging, no long lines, no scrooges....they're all somewhere else at 2 AM.
- Every year around this time I start remembering why I am sorry I bought a home with electric heating....brrr. I grew up with gas heat and electric is just NOT the same. I can be a freeze cat too. Anyone have ideas on SAFE heaters that I could use to augment the toastiness in the bedroom? (No smart comments). I really can't say it's cold. It just isn't that inviting kind of warm.
- A few of the questions...Magi asked: Coke or Pepsi? Neither, but if I must it will be Coke. Ozimum asked about my last 'official' vacay. Wow, it HAS been a while. Yeah, I am a bit of a workaholic at times. I've gotten in trips/weekends with friends but a real 'pack your bags' vacay had to be a Caribbean cruise shortly before I started this blog sooooo long ago. I love cruises and I highly recommend them. Still, I've done the Caribbean thing just too many times (5) now and my dream is an Alaska cruise....someday. Vivian M asked: What is the oldest song you can remember the words to? Ave Maria...now THAT'S old (see, all depends on perspective). Dream date? Mike Rowe...he just cracks me up to no end. I don't get googly over much but, yes, the 'Dirty Jobs' guy just rings my bell. Go figure. Colleen asked about 10K leaves covering the yard and what to do with them. That answer is but two words: John Deere (the other love of my life ;0). Finally, for today, Janet asked: Why are feet beautiful examples of the human form? (She knows I hate 'em). But, she is right. Feet ARE beautiful because you can use them to SQUASH insects!

I tried to learn some Mandarin before our trip. I am pretty good with languages (I speak 5), but Mandarin was too challenging ;-)
I really cross my fingers that you are "in" for this next batch of referrals. It is an amazingly sweet moment! I wish it for you and all of our February peeps!

I have a major crush on the Dirty Jobs guy too!
Hakuna matata! Love it!
I'm with you on shopping in the wee hours for Turkey dinner, I'll be doing my shoppy in the middle of the night as well.
We took a course in Mandarin. I was horrible, but Jim was pretty good. He impressed our guides. I didn't bother to try.
I used to do the midnight grocery shopping, too. I must admit I do miss it, but not enough to go back out there.
LMAO!!!LOVE YOUR FEET REMARK!!!!LOOKING SO FORWARD TO THE DAY YOU POST THAT ANGELS LITTLE FACE.....SOON MY DEAR....SOON!!
LOL! We were "Xi-Xi"ing everyone (we thought it was thank you) but we must have been pronouncing it wrong, coz a friend in Guangzhou said "what are you saying"?!!!
I don't mind my feet. Todd says I have "frogs toes"! They kinda bobble on the end!!!
Who's Mike Rowe?!!!
I am so sorry for your patient... but I am glad she had you to tell her... I know you were very sensitive and empathetic... I pray she will be well.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving festivities....
Can't wait for the holidays next year when your little one is in your arms.
Um....excuse me? SQUASH insects? Without insects, my dear, you would be in biiiig trouble. bUt waaait a minute. I do believe you were baiting me. And I fell for it. Sigh. I'll kick you with my ugly feet.
Just wait until you have a total stranger approach you to tell you what a wonderful thing you did to save a child...with your child in earshot. grrrr....
My husband and I found Chinese Pod to be very helpful when we were studying Mandarin. It is a fascinating language!

Having lost both parents to cancer at a young age, I can attest to the "damn cancer" you speak of. It is a disease that does not care who it strikes and how young its victims are. It is unrelenting in its desire to destroy lives and I hate it.
Now for a more positive posting. I always liked electric blankets, but was not always good about turning them off. We had a portable electric heater once, but we had an exchange student staying with us who left it on all day and gave us a $150 electric bill :0 I have had one of the electric under the desk heaters which blew out as much hot air as the owner of the company!
You are so close I can hardly stand it! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.....
Tough day at work, I am sorry you had to give someone bad news. And as for shopping woes, try going during the week! It seems everyone is out shopping these days. At least over here, anyway.
Thanks for answering the questions. And my feet will never go near a bug unless you want to take me to the emergency room afterwards when I pass out, ewww!!!
I am so happy for you. You have been waiting a long time.
We have two Holmes model HCH6150 room heaters in our house and they are fantastic. They monitor the temperature in the room and automatically turn on when the temperature gets below whatever setting you have put into place. If is falls over, it auto shuts off. We have one in Eli's room and one in our sunroom. They are fabulous.
Damn cancer is right, it sucks. I wish your patient the best. Good luck with your Turkey Day cooking, I haven't been to the store yet either. I'm hoping tomorrow won't be too bad.
I tried the whole Mandarin thing and failed miserably at it. I still have trouble saying Jaden's Chinese name correctly, LOL. :)
I had a patient with poor circulation to his hands and feet. His lovely wife would heat the area of the bed his feet were going with a hair dryer, get him in the bed then heat it a bit more while his feet were there. The covers trapped the warmth, and he slept better because he didn't start out in chilly bedding. I've tried it, and it really does work.
G-d I'm just soooooo jealous that Americans can go shopping in the middle of the night! Not that I can (where do I find a babysitter at that hour?) but, man, just to know it's available.....sigh....

I'm sorry to hear about your patient. I'm sure it's hard to give someone that kind of news. And, knowing you, it's hard to give that news.
I haven't really been in BlogLand lately & have missed much but you have been on my mind.
I like your reason for liking feet. ;-)
Cancer sux. On the other hand, I laughed when reading "just being able to recognize some of the sounds and tones..." HA!!! Can you differentiate the tones? If so I am extremely jealous! I can't hear any difference! Rosetta has failed me...Kudos to you though. =) Then again, I just read that people in Southern Jangxi (where Ellie is) mostly speak Hakka! So there would be a chance she wouldn't be able to understand my basic words anyway! Hey, I'm just trying to make myself feel better about my language disability... =)
Hoping for some amazing rumors this week just in time for Thanksgiving.
I can't say that I've even attempted to learn any mandarin. I've got Ni Hao down and that's as far as I will probably get. I'm wingin' it, on a hope and a prayer.
If you don't get a referral this go around, it's really going to mess with my head and my big plans for a Feb. referral.
Even though I do have a nice snuggly hubby to warm me in bed, he doesn't usually COME to bed until I've been asleep for a LONG time! I've been using my trusty heating pad to warm me when I first go to bed, and my cat now thinks that MY spot is nice and cozy as well!
Praying for your patient...cancer is horrible.
Blessings-Andie
Did you see last week's Dirty Jobs? The shower scene?? Sigh!!!
R yelled to close my eyes. :o) I couldn't though. Yum.
I agree 110% with the electric heat thing. In Chicago I always had gas heat. I didn't know there was such a thing as electric heat until I moved south. I MISS GAS!!!
I hope to go to Alaska too. Maybe we can pack up the boys and head there on day! ;o)
Really miss you. We'll need to plan something soon.
What a fun post !
Hopefully no more ducks needed.
