Not sweating the small stuff...now

Ahhhh...it's Sunday evening and the lingering scent of pumpkin spice is in the air. That's a very good thing and I am feeling remarkably Zen now. The weekend didn't start off this relaxed.

On Friday, I bolted home from the office to go on a cleaning frenzy before the 'social worker visit' Saturday morning. I have absolutely no clue why I was so anxious (except perhaps the Chai tea I have been downing like an addict). I wasn't edgy the first time I did all this stuff three years ago. But, suffice it to say, I was as stressed out as a chihuahua trying to pass a peach pit. I cleaned with neurotic attention to detail. I can admit now that the house wasn't even dirty when I started. After the cleaning catharsis, I was making a pumpkin roll from scratch at 1AM and, while it baked, put festive, harvest corn stalks out by flashlight to keep the porch pumpkins company. (I am sure the neighbors think I'm a fruitcake putting stuff out for the season in the dark of night.)

Finally I was finished and ready. I collected the day's mail in the wee hours and was, for a hot second, thrilled to see my child abuse clearance came in. Well, it's mine if my name is 'Carrie' - which it is not. Everything else was correct but my name. This was a major bite because it is taking quite a while to get these forms back these days. But, be proud, I neither cried nor cussed. I just put it on the pile of things to address during 'the visit'. I think I almost expect there to be a problem with everything anymore. That way I can be pleasantly surprised when it goes smoothly.

I was up with the chickens on Saturday and the visit was easy-peasy. Amazing what the gal was able to remember about my house from three years prior. Yeah, not much about it is the same so I guess it really wasn't that surprising if she said 'is that new?' and the answer was 'yes'. Still, I was impressed with her recall. As for the 'wrong name form' she gave me a direct contact to get that remedied ASAP. But, some things rolled down hill a bit. She arrived with Dunkin' Donuts in her hand. So much for all my little home-made tricks. (#*@. Then, love her for either not noticing or not saying anything, I was mortified when I walked out behind her and then turned around to come back in. Off she drove, but then I turned to see the flashing on the house above the garage all pulled loose and, to top it off, the gutter decided to sag off of the house right over the front door. This is what I get for leaving early, coming home late and decorating in the dark.

I'm just glad the gutter didn't flop off and clock her in the head as she was standing at the front door. No kidding. What an embarrassment. It looks like the flippin' Addams family lives here. Then again, maybe she thinks it's part of the Halloween decor ;0) I should be so lucky. Looks like I'll be on the phone again. I tell ya: home ownership = money pit. I did nearly everything inside by myself but when it comes to roof/gutter issues, I am keeping myself on the ground forever more. I have already found that I am not so graceful on a roof.

Saggy gutters and funky roof aside, life is still very, very good around here these days. I am hoping things get processed in a timely way and I have no more paperwork glitches. The rest of my weekend was perfect and sweet anticipation of the months to come makes everything else not matter so much.

I do believe that peach pit has passed....arf!

Thank goodness you passed that peach pit! But - I have to ask - does that make you the chihuahua? Or maybe it's your social worker?

I can almost smell the pumpkin baking here. It's one of my favorite scents!

Congrats on your SW visit going so easily. I was always a wreck before Stacy came over. My house was spotless in places I haven't seen since her last visit. And, I haven't baked since then either. Oh well.

I knew everything would go PERFECT!

I would love to have been there to see you decorating with a flashlight! :o)

Wish you were closer, I would love a mug of hot tea and a slice of the pumpkin roll while we chatted the evening away! :o)

Enjoy the rest of the evening!

I love pumpkin pis spices... yummy to get us in the "fall" mood. Plus hot apple cider.... Did I mention it is NOT DH's favorite so....

So glad you are hanging in there. Wish we could get a visit in (we are traveling to MO then heading east to ME) - Are you along the way? We should have visited more bloggy friend pre-Alyzabeth.... Get your visits in now - meet with girlfriends now (not impossible afterward, but why wait?).

Have a great week!

Glad the SW visit went well... what a weekend!!

Next year at this time you'll be carving pumpkins with your own little pumpkin... since she's your daughter she'll probably do it herself and it will beof award-winning caliber! You are the handiest homeowner ever, gutters aside :)

I got stuck visualizing the chihuahua. Took me a sec to re-focus.

Glad the visit went well. And you can get on to the important things waiting right around the corner.

We have to meet with our SW on Saturday for our update. I LOVE my SW....She is meeting us at Friday's for lunch AND I won't even have to clean my house.

P.S. You have chickens too? Man, it's busy around your place. =)

Carrie,
baking and decorating by flashlight at 1 am?? I thought you were going to say you locked yourself out of the house.

Love this story. It could so be me (or my mom - I inherited neurotic from her, though somehow it skipped my sister) and I am just laughing. Glad it went well, Carrie. ;) Now I'm envisioning that awful Carrie necklace SJP wore on SATC. Uck.

OMG, I just about ruined my keyboard with coffee when I got to the part about the gutter. You've just made my week, LOL.

Glad the visit is over with though, and I'm always available to help with that pumpkin roll. ;)

We went crazy cleaning for our SW as well, then she didn't even take a tour. *sigh*. Glad your meeting went smoothly.

Decorating in the dark and baking at 1:00 sounded like something I would do - When I can't sleep, I need to be doing. Who would choose a Dunkin Donut over a pumpking roll? Not me :) It's funny how we all assume things are going to go wrong.

Hope your saggy stuff gets fixed soon and inexpensively!
When we had our homestudy visit, the day before the SW was due our upstairs neighbor decided to flood our kitchen, which ruined it. We had no electricity and watched as popcorn ceiling bits fell on the social worker's head throughout her visit. I am still surprised we passed!

For all the neurotic cleaning I did, our social worker never did whip out the white gloves! (I was mildly disappointed.)

You have done a ton of work on your house over the past year. I think it's great that she noticed :)
And a pumpkin roll totally trumps dunkin donuts!

I wish I had just an ounce of your energy! :0)

I'm glad the visit went well, gutter falling aside... I can't freaking believe how close you are now. I know you thought these days would never come and here they are!

LOVE pumpkin pie smells. Now if the weather would just cooperate and get a tad bit cooler again! The fall colors are just amazing right now!
