- No piccies today because I am simply too wiped to battle Blogger which is skittish with the uploads tonight. You'll have to trust me that my girl is still all that and a sack of congee :0)
- It has been a little rough going lately. My SIL is a sickie and I've been dragging babelet in and out in the rainy cold. Rainy & cold has been the Nanchang experience since we arrived. I am really over it about now.
- We did some hotel spelunking and found a creepy secret passage behind a beautiful marble wall. We didn't venture far because who knew what was in there???
- Uh, points scored to all who decided that funky thing in the last post was a female urination device to help with aim in squatty potties. That is precisely what it is and I am just thrilled that it was staring at me from the nightstand. 'Whoa' is all I can say to it being used for formula. I have managed to avoid the squatty experience the entire trip thus far. I just don't feel the love.
- I do LOVE Leechee fruit. That stuff is awesome.
- We ventured back to Wal-Mart today to score the Chinese version of cold meds and cough syrup for my SIL. That was quite a venture. I have to say that I absolutely love the Chinese people for the most part. They are so kind and helpful. But, there is always the exception. I got the smackdown in the baby food aisle from the clothing police. She was a vicious one. She gave me the stink eye and was pulling at PIPA's clothes and grabbing my hand. I didn't really feel the warm fuzzies.
- Nanchang taxi rides WILL turn you into a praying person if you are not one.
- PIPA broke through the log jam of poop last night with some tummy massage and leg exercises. It was some hard work and a fair amount of tears but she was one happy baby when the jam broke free. We're cranking along just fine now.
- Girlfriend eats like a horse. Amazing what that little body can take in. I have to regulate or I do believe she would eat until she popped.
- Did I mention it was very cold and rainy here? It's the kind of weather that you feel in your bones. I am ready for Guangzhou...no doubt.
- PIPA smiles like an absolute hambone when you point a camera at her now.
- We are working with our PT exercises. She has a floppy flexibility that freaks me out a bit but, hey, she could be an acrobat. She puts her arms back behind her and then bends them at the elbow. This has earned her the nickname: Claire Qing Chicken Wing. Poor kid is going to think 'Chicken Wing' is her name because it is kinda sticking ;0)
- Don't eat anything called 'local meat'
- There are many unusual smells in China. That is hard to get used to as well. It takes getting out of your culture to really appreciate the differences of other cultures.
- I was kidding when I said I wanted the baby who would easily go to sleep and then just lay in her crib, smile and play until I was ready to get her going for the day. So far, that is EXACTLY the kid I have. I'll soak it up while it lasts. If it weren't for the other wildly social and fun aspects of her personality I would be worried that she was on mental/emotional lockdown but she is not. She's doing very well interacting during the day.
- I found these amazing Oreo cookie bar things here and, wow, are they good. Yeah, just what I need.
- We had KFC today. One of the pieces had a feather still sticking on it. I know I am settling in just fine because I just plucked the thing off and kept on going. That would have wigged me out on Day One. Give me a month here and I probably would eat fish eyes.
- Off to kick back. Hope all is going well for you all. I really do love China but I will be happy to get us all home as well.

I hope your SIL gets feeling better soon! Only a few more days in you will be in Guangzou were the weather will be much nicer!
Ellen
So glad all is flowing smoothly now! It must be such a relief for Miss PIPA.
Secret passages + urination devises + feathers in fried chicken = TOO MUCH FOR ME!! Wow!
I hope your SIL is feeling better soon.
I finally got caught up on your adventure. Just incredible. I'm so so so happy for you. Keep enjoying that amazing little baby. She is precious. YAY! Finally!!
I hope you SIL feels better soon. I love reading your updates. It brings back so many memories of our own two trips. I cannot wait to meet Miss Chicken Wing :-)
Oh wow - a potty funnel. Wow. You gotta appreciate the cultural differences! Glad it was you there - not me - I might have used it for formula! Sorry to hear that your SIL is sick. Hopefully GZ will be warm and sunny!
I hope your SIL is better soon, I can't imagine being sick so far away from home - that's gotta totally bite the big one!
I have to admit that I refresh your blog all day long like a mental patient. I think I'm still in denial that you're actually in China with Claire...lol. I mean, it's so surreal to me that after having known you for almost 3 years that you're actually there!!!!! I can't wait for you to come home safe and to eventually meet her. Oh, and I have to share a pic with you from the day MGM was born - seems you and I have mirror images of our first days w/our wee ones... wait til you see :)
I love you madly (don't tell the Hubs;) and I think about you guys ALL THE TIME. Sending up good vibes for you daily :)
Love ya DD!!!!!
Okay, so was that you did was wish for a laid back girl who sleeps good and lays in her bed till you show up or did you actually write that in your dossier!?! ;0) I need pointers cause I need to act quick, got one month to go and I'd like me a Claire Qing Chicken Wing.
So many of your observations made me smile... it was like stepping back in time. The Nanchang taxi ride? Yeah. We have ours on video. BwwaaaHaHaHa!
Best update EVER. So much packed in here I don't even know where to begin to comment! Hearing about the smells brought back memories of some third world homes of my own. Chicken feathers included- we used to have to buy ours live at the local market and pluck our own!
SO glad little "chicken wing" (god her nickname is the BEST-the whole version, that is) is settling in so well- you guys sound like a perfect match FOR SURE.
Hope you get one day of SUN... dreary weather is awful especially for your poor sick SIL- hope she feels better soon!
Ewwwww @ the pee device and feather. Yay for poop! Hunan was cold and rainy too, you'll like Guangzhou SO much better. And the clothing-police portion of the trip will be over too, I hated that part.
So glad your sweetie is doing so well, can't wait to see more pics of her cute mug. Hope SIL is better soon!!
Found your blog from "Catherine's Chatter"...delightful. Love reading about your adventures...we all get far too little vicarious adoption adventures these days. Love your sense of humor, too. Oy, the feather on the chicken...don't know if I could have dealt. I was fairly discriminatory about my choices of food when we were in China. We were treated to an authentic Cantonese meal in Guangzhou...a great experience, but I stopped at rice and green beans. Let's just say, if it crawled in its former life, it was on the menu. Bleh.
Now, about that little baby girl...just darling! She is really beautiful, and I'm always so happy for a new momma! Congratulations! I'm sure that now the long wait all makes a little more sense. It's so fun to see their personalities emerge. Caroline was a live wire from Day One. And she makes us laugh EVERY day!
Looking forward to further updates...you will LOVE Guangzhou! It was sunny and in the 80s when we were there two years ago in February. Hopefully, you'll have the same or better!
Later on when you're home and settled and ready to blog surf again, stop by...

HMMMM wonder if the only give those to the foreigners? (HOPE IT WAS CLEAN!)
Seriously bummen about the no Pipa fix but also totally understand.
Hope your SIL is feeling better by now. I ate a wrap at KFC in Nanchang. Veggies and all! (what was I thinking and why didn't anyone stop me?) Paid for it that night!
Hoping the Sun comes out soon for you all :)
So glad things are going well, overall. HOpe your SIL feels better soon! PIPA sounds amazing, as does the transition. Hopefully, GZ will be warmer, but don't count on it being dry.
Can't believe you have not had to use the Squtty potty yet! We couldn't seem to avoid them. Good for you.
Yep, if you're not accustomed to praying on your knees, the floor of a Chinese taxi cab is a fine place to start.
Also, I do NOT recommend a squatty potty after walking all day. I did that after walking the Forbidden City all day and can I just say, "I've squatted and I can't get up?" The last thing I wanted was an international incident in a squatty potty, thank you.
Pipa sounds like she is lovin' her mama and thankful she didn't use the funnel for her formula :). I'm loving reading your posts. Makes my day start off with a smile.
This is the best bullet list I've read in awhile. Had me smiling, tearing up and cracking up all in the same post. :-)
I totally could have used that little device! When we were at ChimLong I experienced the dreaded squatty potty and totally missed!
Food - Little T would eat like crazy and then hold some food (piece of toast or something) all day. If we tried to take it away she would scream! If she wasn't holding it then it was on me somewhere!!
Hugs,
Carla
I sure hope your SIL feels better soon. Good news on the POOP front! Can you bring us up to speed on the shopping front? What'ja buy your little princess? The porcelain tea sets are famous.Actually it's the porcelain anything!!!!
Doreen in Montreal single mom to Faith-Jiangxi & Mia-Sichuan
I love your unique humour and take on life! Life is only enhanced by log jams, freaky feathers rather being a downer.
Hope the sun shines, the poop keeps coming and your SIL feels better soon.
Keep smilin!
Sounds like you are up to a whole lot. have a groovy trip. I had a feeling that funnel was for pee!
I am just so happy for you guys. xo
LOL! Tari was the same! So easygoing... just wait a bit longer... and you'll really start to see her personality! Tari has proven to be quite the firecracker!!!
Your poor SIL! I took enough medicines to start my own pharmacy... thankfully we barely used any of it!
Oooo a secret passage?! Sounds interesting!
I was surprised (and unprepared) for how warm GZ is. Enjoy the warmth!
Miss C is just da bom! She looks absolutely gorgeous in the photo below! Look at that cute little smile!!! Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth?!
You're too funny. Next week you'll eat the chicken with the head still attached... I just know it. LOL!
Glad PIPA is doing well. Can't wait for more pics. :P
OMG. .. I would never in a million years thought that funnel looking thing was for urinating. I only had to use one squatty potty on our entire trip. Thank goodness I had a skirt on that day. (made things just a bit easier)
I'm thinking Claire is just going to be easy going like her momma. Only now is Maddy giving us grief about going to bed at night but she has decided she is afraid of the dark. Before now, easy to bed... no tears, nothing! And when she wakes on her own.. Excellent Mood! My kind of child. (and yours too it sounds like)
So glad your journey in China is going well! Can't wait to see your pictures and videos once home and all settled in :0)
What a great list! I loved reading about PIPA and your adventures so far. I sure hope your SIL feels better soon.
Ahh yes, the smells of China. Eight months and I am still having difficulty with them.
I love the name Claire Qing Chicken Wing, how cute can she be?!
The thing about pulling the feather off is so funny, it's so how I live now. Just stomp a cock roach and move on.
Come down to warm Guangzhou! You are going to love the Island with the Starbucks and baby shops.
LOL - I am SO glad you did not listen to me and use that for formula!!! Ewww, gross.
And I don't care how long we stayed in China, you could not convince me to eat some of the things the locals did (testicles, eyeballs, chicken feet among other things!).
Hope the rest of your stay there is wonderful, stay healthy and hope SIL gets well soon. You are going to LOVE Guangzhou!!!
GZ will feel like a vacation spot!
Your stay sounds like RObins when she went to China for Miss Maddy:(
Hannah said just pretend that you are a rock star and you will totally get used to people staring at you...
Hope your partner in crime is feeling better soon!
Happy and safe travels friend
HOPE GZ IS NICE AND SUNNY FOR YOU AND SIL FEELS BETTER SOON....LOVE THE UPDATES!!
Sorry to hear that your SIL is having the sicky ickies. That is definitely no fun when you're away from home.
A pee pee funnel? I just can't go there. We never had to deal with squatty potties. Then again, we stayed in the White Swan for our entire trip.
Happy news to hear that the damn broke for PIPA. I can just picture the damn breaking. Thanks. Not. :-)
You know I never saw one of those things the entire time I lived in China.
So glad everything is going well for you!
Girl, you crack me up. I love the Claire Qing Chicken Wing nickname and so glad Pipa "broke on through" with her poo. YAY!
Sorry to hear about the clothing police episode. Geez. Hope it gets warm and quits raining soon. I just love that little love muffin of yours.
Hugs,
Jonni
